Covers & Features
The images that carry the issue. Cover and opener frames receive the deepest finish we offer: considered skin work, garment cleanup that never flattens the photograph, and every detail checked at full print size.

Pic Visual’s editorial desk finishes fashion photography for magazines, art directors and photographers who publish with intent — skin kept honest, garments kept true, a grade that holds from cover to last page.
Why Editorial Is Different
Editorial retouching is not production retouching with better lighting. A catalog image has to be accurate; an editorial image has to mean something. The finish is a creative decision — how much reality stays in the skin, how far the color leans, where the eye lands — made with the art director, not from a preset.
That is why editorial work runs as its own desk at Pic Visual, briefed separately from high-volume production. The photograph’s idea survives the retouching, and the set holds together as a story.
We work with magazine editors preparing an issue, art directors building a feature, and photographers who want a finishing partner that speaks the language of the shoot.
The Departments
Every editorial job passes through the same four departments, whether it is a single cover frame or a sixteen-page story — each working to the brief, and to the test files you approve first.
The images that carry the issue. Cover and opener frames receive the deepest finish we offer: considered skin work, garment cleanup that never flattens the photograph, and every detail checked at full print size.
Publication-standard skin: tone evened and distractions resolved while pores, texture and character stay in the frame. Hair is cleaned where the shot demands it, makeup edges refined, and close-ups finished to be looked at, not glanced past.
A feature is a sequence, and its color is part of the writing. We build the grade from your references, set it on the opening frames, and hold it across the story, so the set reads as one argument.
The last pass before the presses. Masters are checked at full resolution, prepared to your printer’s specification, and every crop the issue needs is produced from the same approved master, never re-finished twice.
The Standard
Editorial readers linger on faces. We even tone and resolve distractions, but pores, texture and expression are part of the casting — they stay.
Color, print and fabric behavior are matched to the physical piece, so readers fall for what the designer actually made.
Color is set by the narrative — the mood of the issue, the season, the photographer’s eye — then held steady across the set, never pasted from a trend.
The Running Order
Five stages, agreed up front — so a deadline becomes a plan, not a hope.
You send the story, the references and the publication’s specifications. We agree the finish before a single file is touched.
We finish a small selection from the shoot first — up to 5 images free on a first job — so the look is approved on your own photography.
The full set is retouched against the approved tests: skin, garment, grade and cleanup applied as one consistent hand across every frame.
You receive proofs of the finished set. Mark up what should move — a tone, a detail, a crop — and the notes go back into the work.
Approved masters are prepared to specification and delivered print-ready, with every version produced from the same approved files.
Collaboration
Editorial finishing is a conversation. Send moodboards, reference issues, marked-up contact sheets — whatever carries the intention of the shoot. A lead retoucher holds your job from test files to delivery, so the tenth frame is finished with the same intent as the first.
Working on something still under wraps? Unpublished material is handled as confidential from arrival to delivery, and we are happy to work under your NDA.
Deliverables
Every approved frame leaves the desk as a family of files from the same master finish — print, social and web never drift apart.
| Version | What you receive |
|---|---|
| Cover crop | Vertical crop composed for masthead and cover lines. |
| Feature spreads | Full-bleed and page crops at publication size, in story order. |
| Social cutdowns | Square and vertical versions for the issue’s social channels, same grade throughout. |
| Print-ready masters | High-resolution files prepared to your printer’s specification, checked full-size. |
| Web editions | Lightweight versions for the online edition, matched to print. |
Pricing
Editorial work is priced as a project, not from a rate card: a cover and a sixteen-page feature are different undertakings, and a fixed quote keeps the budget as controlled as the finish. Send the brief, image count and deadline — the quote returns before work begins.
New to the desk? The first test files are free: up to 5 images, finished to the standard your story needs, so the quote that follows rests on a finish you have already seen.
Questions
It is the finishing craft behind magazine and story-led fashion photography. Skin, garment, color and composition are refined to an art-directed standard rather than a catalog standard, so every frame carries the mood of its story.
Send the specifications from your publication or printer with the brief — page size, resolution and color requirements — and every file is finished and checked against them. Masters arrive print-ready, with all crops produced from the same approved files.
Yes. Send test images from the shoot — up to 5 images are retouched free — and judge the finish on your own photography before the full set is booked in.
After the finishing pass you receive proofs of the set. Mark up anything to adjust — skin, grade, garment detail — and the notes are folded into the final pass, so the masters you receive are the approved versions.
Yes — consistency across the set is the core of editorial work. The grade is set on the opening frames, documented, and held across every image, so the feature reads as one body of work, first page to last.
Unpublished work is treated as confidential from the moment it arrives. Files are handled only by the team assigned to your job, and we are happy to work under your NDA or confidentiality terms.
Every approved frame arrives as a family: the print-ready master, cover and feature crops, social cutdowns and a web edition — all produced from the same master finish, so nothing is re-retouched or re-graded twice.
